About the Forum

Mission

Ancient Civilizations Law Forum is founded on the belief that ancient civilizations with deep historical, philosophical, and legal traditions retain a unique capacity to enrich, interpret, and help shape contemporary international law.

The Forum seeks to create an intellectual space in which scholars from diverse civilizational traditions engage in meaningful dialogue on current international legal challenges and contribute to the development of a more inclusive and intellectually grounded international legal order.

Philosophy and Aims

ACLForum is not a conventional blog. It is a scholarly, multi-vocal forum where the inherited legal wisdom of Persian, Greek, Roman, Indian, Chinese, and other ancient traditions is brought into productive dialogue with the pressing questions of contemporary international law.

The Role of Ancient Civilizations in International Law

From the codes of ancient Mesopotamia and the philosophical reflections of classical Greece, to the treaty practices of the Roman world, the legal pluralism of imperial China, and the conceptions of dharma and just conduct in classical India — ancient traditions offer rich resources for reimagining the foundations of international law.

Looking Forward

ACLForum will publish short essays, analyses, and commentaries; foster dialogue among researchers, editors, and reviewers; and build a global community of scholars committed to a more inclusive international legal order.
